Objectives
The program focuses on learning about design processes and developing student-driven projects. Visual literacy, creative thinking, and visual communication techniques are taught by:
- Developing skills and understanding of various types of drawing used in graphic practices.
- Carrying out architectural and industrial projects to learn about the fundamental design development process.
- To be able to find creative and unique solutions to design problems in real life context.
- Developing practical skills in a range of digital media and tools such as – Blender, Photoshop, Illustrator, CorelDraw, 3D printing and laser cutting.

MYP Unit | Outline |
Why is Communication Important? | Learn practical skills to aid visual communication. These will include drawing techniques, digital design tools and the elements and principles of design. |
Ideations - Handheld Product | Learning the concept of Ideation and the process of design – how to create your own unique and creative design ideas to solve a design problem. |
The Spatial Project | Students will take the skills they have learnt and their knowledge of the design process to create a solution to their architectural design project. They will create a portfolio of work that documents their design process and the creation of their food-related experience. |
Modelling and Presentation | Students create a model to present their final concept to a chosen audience. |
Subject Overview
Term 1
Why is Communication Important?
Students learn a range of practical skills to aid visual communication. These will include drawing techniques, digital design tools and the elements and principles of design.
Term 2
Ideate This:
Students learn the process of form exploration and ideation to resolve a design outcome – Students will be coming up with their own unique brief to design a product with given guidelines. Students will be applying the skills they have grasped in Term 1 to express their emerging design ideas and begin to visually communicate their process.
Term 3
Students will take the skills they have learnt and their knowledge of the design process to complete an architectural project for a dining experience. They will create a portfolio of work that documents their development of ideas that will also lead into their Term 4 project.
Term 4
Students will create a physical model of their design from the previous Term. Students will learn 3D CAD software, 3D printing, and laser cutting to create a model of their structure.
