Objectives
- To extend students' linguistic and cultural understanding and their ability to interact appropriately with others.
- To introduce students to new ways of thinking about, questioning, and interpreting the world and their place in it.
- To acquire knowledge, skills and attitudes that equip students for living in a world of diverse peoples, languages and cultures.
- To challenge and consider our own identities and assumptions.
- To develop understanding of the power of language.
- To enjoy using another language in meaningful situations.
The course builds on topics covered in Year 9. Students continue to develop their skills using a wide variety of tasks, authentic resources and digital tools.

School Life | How is school life organised? Students learn to talk about their subjects, opinions and discover what their day might look like if they went to school in a Spanish speaking country. |
Home Sweet Home | Students learn to talk about their homes and the places they live in and compare those to how people live in Spanish speaking countries. |
Free Time and Other Stuff | Students learn to talk about hobbies and sports in New Zealand and Spanish speaking countries. They learn to discuss what they do in their free time and what they do to support their own well-being. |
Celebrations | Students learn to talk about traditions celebrated in Spanish speaking countries. |

Term 1
School Life.
Likes and dislikes with reasons, linking expressions, words for clarifying information, time, question words, transport.
Term 2
Home Sweet Home.
House vocabulary, ordinal numbers, prepositions, demonstrative adjectives, furniture.
Term 3
Free Time and Other Stuff.
Modal phrases, personal pronouns, verbs, present tense conjugation, sentence structure, possession, adverbs, reflexive verbs.
Term 4
Celebrations.
Day of the Dead, New Year's.
Recommended Prior Learning
- Year 9 Spanish.
- In cases of proven language ability, a student may begin at Year 10 level – following discussion with Head of Faculty.
