11 Digital Technologies Computing (Introduction to digital media and databases)

Subject Description

Objectives

Students will  

  • Create and manage databases using a combination of Microsoft Access and simple SQL coding. Being able to complete the basic CRUD - create, read, update, delete - functions and facilities of Access. Be able to present and analyse the data gathered from research regarding this database.
  • Use a combination of online and offline tools to create conceptual designs and use appropriate design elements for a variety of digital outcomes.
  • Become proficient with the use of spread-sheeting software, e.g. Google Sheets and/or Microsoft Excel. Use and choose relevant tools and present findings to a wide range of users.
  • Use their creativity and initiative to develop a detailed set of game designs and promote this in an oral presentation to a range of stakeholders and potential buyers.

Content 

Students will be

  • Developing, and becoming proficient in HTML and CSS coding skills. This will enable students to develop both their practical coding and design skills when it comes to website design. 
  • Students will be developing a strong foundation in spread-sheeting skills. They will develop a range of skills, including - the creation and manipulation of tables and data within the tables, using functions in the spreadsheet, and creating relevant graphs and charts.
  • Collecting data leading to the design and creation of a simple relational database.
  • Understanding the importance of the design elements regarding games/apps and producing an oral presentation or video, potentially sell the app/game to a wide audience. This will be judged by a panel of teachers.

Description

Website Design and Prototyping

Students will be designing and coding a website, using a combination of HTML and CSS code, while showing evidence of stakeholder feedback. Advanced students may choose to use aspects of Javascript.

Spread-sheeting - Happiness Report

 

Spread-sheeting - A Competitive Edge

Students are to use spread-sheeting techniques, including - charts, formulae, and sorting - in order to create a presentation about two countries and make an argument about why one is happier than the other.

Students will need to research the results and history of any competition and create a written report with results and analysis provided about the identified competition.

Databases - The Truth about this Issue...

Students will utilise various functions of the DBMS (Database Management Software) in order to complete various tasks, including – queries, creating and editing tables, and creating forms and reports. Basic SQL coding is required to allow the database to complete the CRUD operations effectively.

The Biggest Game since Minecraft!!!

Students will be designing an original game using the relevant design elements and presenting their findings in a dragon's den-style environment.  They will be assessed on creativity and the persuasiveness that their potential game/app will meet the needs of a wider audience. It will be judged by a  panel of teachers, from a range of subjects.

Cost: $5.00 for Web server space and database.
Associated Costs: Computer Lab printing costs.
