Subject Description

Objectives
- Develop geographic understanding of the world by using local, national and global case studies to inquire into a range of topics based around geographic theory, concepts and skills.
- Develop understanding of Geography as a bridge between the Social Sciences and Physical Sciences through investigating Physical Geography, Human Geography, Environmental Geography and Geographic Information Science.
- Develop geographic knowledge, concepts and skills.
Content
- Beside the Seaside - Coasts: An Ideal Place to Live or a Disaster Waiting to Happen? - What are coastal processes? How do coastal processes shape the environment? What challenges do they and coastal environments bring for people? (tsunamis, coastal erosion) How do people manage these? How will they change in the future? Future sustainability of coastal areas (sea level rise).
- Unique Environments: Jungles, Deserts, Snow and Steam - Where are these environments? What are they like? Who lives there? Resource exploitation and use in these environments.
- Population - Global population diversity, distribution, change over time, challenges of growing populations (slums, megacities), challenges facing populations (refugees), and future sustainability.
- Geographic in the Spotlight - Investigating current local, national and global geographic issues - What is the issue? What causes the issue? What are the effects? How do people perceive the issue? What are the solutions?
- Geographic Investigation - Using geographic research skills to investigate an environment.
- Geographic Concepts, Skills and Information Science.
- Local Day Field Trips to Support the Learning - Two local day field trips to support the topics covered.

Geography is a core foundation subject for any career that focuses on connections with the environment, and students with a base in Geography can use their geographic knowledge to support the fields of engineering, science, law, management, commerce, or technology. Geography develops skills that are transferrable to many other subjects and that employers are looking for are: adaptability, communication, critical thinking, digital literacy, leadership, collaboration, problem solving, engagement with others, relationship building.
