Subject Description
Teacher in Charge: Mr S. Griffiths.
Objectives
- Students will participate in a wide range of recreational activities and outdoor challenge tasks where a high level of engagement is expected.
- Students will develop an understanding of the skills needed to plan for and participate in safe and enjoyable activities in the outdoors.
- Students will develop their interpersonal skills and self-management strategies through goal setting and personal reflection in group work tasks.
- Students will develop an awareness of the positive and negative impact they can have on their local environment.
Content
Learning and Assessment Area | Description |
Outdoor Education Experiences | Participate actively in a variety of recreational activities and outdoor challenges and explain factors that influence participation. Experience outdoor activities such as Kayaking, White-Water Rafting, Paddle Boarding, Orienteering and Tramping. |
Adventure Based Learning (ABL) | Introduction to ABL. Includes sequenced activities, trust activities and problem solving or team challenges, for educational or developmental outcomes. Students learn to cooperate, communicate, and work effectively as a group. |
Bushcraft | Demonstrate and apply understanding of Bushcraft knowledge and skills essential for ensuring safe and enjoyable day walks (risk management, first aid, navigation, cooking, leadership, and preparation for tramping). |
Environmental Awareness | Demonstrate understanding of the function and importance of marine reserves. |

Term 1
My Impact.
Focus: My impact on my experiences and those of others.
- Adventure Based Learning: Team Building activities scaffolded to develop communication, cooperation and trust in team work situations.
- Outdoor Challenge Day Out: Water Safety course.
Term 2
Coast to Coast.
Focus: Risk Assessment.
- Outdoor Challenge Skill Development: Sea Kayaking Trip to Motukorea Island with Auckland Sea Kayaks.
- Trip Planning Basics in Preparation for the Coast to Coast Challenge Walk: Navigation, risk management, equipment, tramping fitness, weather.
- Training walks in the local area.
- 1 day City Walk - Coast to Coast Challenge.
Term 3
Bushcraft.
Focus: Bushcraft (trip planning for bush tramping).
- Trip planning in preparation for a 1 day bush tramp: Navigation, risk management, first aid, equipment, tramping fitness, camp cooking, flora & fauna.
- 1 day/night tramp in the New Zealand bush.
Term 4
Environment and Sustainability.
- Research and present about an environmental issue and how we can increase sustainability in New Zealand.
- 1 day/night tramp in the New Zealand bush (Pinnacles).
Recommended Prior Learning
Good overall performance in Year 10 Physical Education an advantage.
This is a restricted entry course - approval by the Faculty Leader may be required. If you select this course, you must also choose a BACKUP subject.
Subject and Associated Costs
Associated Costs: $500.00 Activity fee for trips and excursions.
