Subject Description

Objectives
- Investigate adolescent issues that teenagers have in today’s society.
- Understand reasons for the choices people make that affect their well-being and explore and evaluate options and consequences.
- Plan strategies to respond to challenging situations.
- Analyse how society influences the choices we make.

- To discuss with an open mind various health issues.
- To become more aware of the health issues in society.
Content
- Develop an understanding of resilience.
- Explore risk and protective factors which operate at the personal, interpersonal and societal level.
- Explore a variety of strategies that develop and maintain the protective factors and minimise the risk factors.
- Promote awareness of issues relating to mental and emotional well-being.
- Review or revise an aspect of school policy and practice related to student’s well-being.
- Developing understanding of gender identity and sexual identity.
- Influences on gender identity and sexual identity (cultural, media, interrelationships with others).
- Social justice and strategies for addressing inequalities in gender and sexuality situations.
- Analyse a variety of adolescent health issues including binge drinking in preparation for externals.

Term 1
Achievement Standard 91236 - Internally assessed - 5 credits.
Evaluate factors that influence peoples' ability to manage change.
Students will be able to develop a conceptually sound understanding of the concept of resilience in relation to the change situation.
Insight into the change situation beyond the immediate evidence.
Understanding of how the major life change results in many interrelated changes.
Links between the risk and protective factors to the the relevant determinant of health.
The interrelationship between the personal, interpersonal and societal factors influencing people's ability to cope with change.
Term 2
Achievement Standard 91237 - 5 credits.
Take action to enhance an aspect of people's wellbeing within the school or wider community.
Students will take action to enhance an aspect of people's well-being within the school or wider community. This involves identifying an issue that affects the well-being of people within the school, developing a workable plan to improve well-being, implementing the plan, and evaluating the effectiveness of the action. This will draw on the understanding of SMART goals.
Term 3
Achievement Standard 91235.
Analyse an adolescent health issue.
Preparation for external and end of year exam.
Achievement Standard 91239 - Internally assessed 5 credits.
Analyse issues related to sexuality and gender to develop strategies for addressing the issues.
The analysis involves explaining influences on gender and sexuality, recommending personal, interpersonal, and societal strategies to strategies to address the issues, which reflect social justice.
Term 4
Exam Preparation.
Externally assessed - Achievement Standard 91235.
Analyse an adolescent health issue - 5 credits.
