Subject Description

Objectives

  • Develop an understanding of natural and cultural (human) processes and how they shape environments.
  • Develop geographic skills used for analysis, interpretation and decision-making.
  • Investigate contemporary local and global geographic issues.
  • Undertake research to understand the geographic environment.

Content

  • Cultural Processes - Tourism development (Rotorua).
  • Global Geographic Topic - Possible topics: Illegal drugs trade, maritime piracy, coral reefs, sea level rise, human trafficking.
  • Contemporary Geographic Issue - Coastal erosion on the Coromandel Peninsula or the sustainability of the Hauraki Gulf.
  • Geographic Research - Patterns and sustainability: Tourism development in Rotorua.
  • Geographic Concepts and Skills - Investigate environments through the application of concepts and skills.

Recommended Prior Learning

14 credits in NCEA Level 2 Geography, including at least one internal standard and at least one external standard

OR

Geography can be taken for the first time in Year 13 if students meet the requirements for Year 13 English.

Subject and Associated Costs

Course Costs: $25.00 Geographic Skills workbook.
Associated Costs: $450.00 approx. Local and overnight (Rotorua) field trips associated with the tourism development, contemporary geographic issue and research topics.
