Objectives

  • Investigate adolescent issues that teenagers have in today’s society.
  • Understand reasons for the choices people make that affect their well-being and explore and evaluate options and consequences.
  • To critically evaluate health issues.
  • To discuss with an open mind various health issues.
  • To become more aware of the health issues in society.
  • Explore personal, inter-personal and societal influences on these issues.
  • Listening skills and assertiveness skills through role plays.
  • Develop debating skills around health issues.

  • Health promotion.
  • Contemporary ethical issues.
  • Traditional, western scientific, and complementary forms of medicine.


Subject Overview

Term 1
Achievement Standard 91461 - Internally assessed - 5 credits.
Analyse a New Zealand health issue.
To carry out an investigation into a New Zealand health issue.

Topics could include:
Mental health or resilience in school and the wider community.
Concepts of masculinity, or femininity.
The portrayal of sexuality in the media.
Teenage sexual health.
Use of a specific drug among 15-24 year olds.
Prevalence of a specific disease in specific populations.
Discrimination, or harassment.
Ethnic or culturally specific issues.
Poverty.

Term 2
Achievement Standard 91464 - Internally assessed - 4 credits.
Analyse a contemporary ethical issue in relation to well-being.
Students will analyse a contemporary ethical issue explaining opposing and differing perspectives on the issue. They will consider personal, interpersonal and societal effects on well-being of current practice related to the ethical issue. Preferably from a New Zealand context, though overseas situations may be considered.

Topics could include:
Euthanasia.
Immunisation.
Organ donation.
Access to fertility treatment.
Reproductive technologies.
Access to elective cosmetic or other surgery.
Pornography.
Abortion.
Access to contemporary medical technologies.
Dress codes related to cultural or religious beliefs.
Parental rights and the treatment of children.
Privacy in the digital age.

Term 3
Achievement Standard - Internally assessed - 5 credits.
Evaluate health practices currently used in New Zealand.

To carry out an investigation into health practices - Evaluate three health practices one from Western Scientific Medicine, another from complementary/and or alternative medicine, or traditional, and a third from either category. Discuss the practice in relation to a health circumstance.

Topics could include:
Mental illness e.g. major or chronic depression.
Addiction e.g. smoking.
Physical illness or disease e.g. cancer, diabetes.
Pain management e.g. back pain, arthritis, migraines.
Reproductive health e.g. birth, (in)fertility.

Term 4
Achievement Standard 91465 - Externally assessed.
Evaluate models for health promotion.
Revision for external examination.

Candidates will be expected to apply knowledge and understanding from their learning to scenarios and/or stimulus material provided in a separate resource booklet.

Candidates will be required to analyse resources through:
Identifying relevant health determinants.
Provide implications for individuals, others, and society.
Provide strategies that bring about more equitable outcomes.

Topics could include:
Culture and gender.
Sexual and reproductive health.
Disease.
Immunisation.
Life expectancy.
Drug use.
Colonisation and the health of indigenous peoples.
Globalisation and health.

Recommended Prior Learning

A Merit grade or higher in two of the Level 2 Health Achievement Standards, and an Achieved level or higher in the Level 2 Health External AS 91235 (2.1).

This is a restricted entry course - approval by the Faculty Leader may be required. If you select this course, you must also choose a BACKUP subject.
