Scholarship Geography

Subject Description

Teacher in Charge: Ms L. Tomlinson.

Scholarship Geography challenges students to develop a deeper understanding of their world and an insight into one theme of Geography from a social, economic, political, environmental and indigenous lens. The areas explored in the Geography Scholarship programme will enable students to develop a greater understanding of their world, and an insight into the future. Students taking Scholarship Geography respond to questions that involve critically analysing, processing, selecting, extracting, justifying, predicting, integrating, and presenting information.

The theme (or topic) of the Scholarship Geography examination changes each year.

In 2024, the examination questions and resource booklet will focus on the theme of Demography in a Global Context.

Resource materials (such as maps, text, photographs, models, graphs, tables, and cartoons) related to this theme are provided in the examination. However, students are required to include a wide range of case studies, using information and ideas from within the resource materials AND from their studies in Geography. Students are expected to demonstrate understanding of a range of geographic perspectives and to use their geographic knowledge, skills, and understanding to support their answers.  Due to this, Year 13 Geography is a requirement for taking Scholarship Geography.

After-school tutorials are held throughout Terms 1, 2 and 3 to teach students the skills needed to write a Scholarship Geography response, and to develop knowledge of the theme.  Regular readings are also placed on Google Classroom to help develop knowledge of the theme and to promote critical thinking. Three within-school workshops are held during school time during Terms 2, 3 and 4 to support the required learning, and after-school lectures held at the University of Auckland are also possible.
