Subject Description

Objectives

  • Investigate adolescent issues that teenagers have in today’s society.
  • Understand reasons for the choices people make that affect their well-being and explore and evaluate options and consequences.
  • Plan strategies to respond to challenging situations.
  • Analyse how society influences the choices we make.
  • To critically evaluate health issues.
  • To discuss with an open mind various health issues.
  • To become more aware of the health issues in society.

Content

  • Develop an understanding of resilience.
  • Explore risk and protective factors which operate at the personal, interpersonal and societal level.
  • Explore a variety of strategies that develop and maintain the protective factors and minimise the risk factors.
  • Promote awareness of issues relating to mental and emotional well-being.
  • Review or revise an aspect of school policy and practice related to student’s well-being.
  • Developing understanding of gender identity and sexual identity.
  • Influences on gender identity and sexual identity (cultural, media, interrelationships with others).
  • Social justice and strategies for addressing inequalities in gender and sexuality situations.
  • Analyse a variety of adolescent health issues including binge drinking in preparation for externals.


Subject Overview

Term 1
Achievement Standard 91236 - Internally assessed 5 credits.
Evaluate factors that influence peoples' ability to manage change.

Students will be able to develop a conceptually sound understanding of the concept of resilience in relation to the change situation.
Insight into the change situation beyond the immediate evidence.
Understanding of how the major life change results in many interrelated changes.
Links between the risk and protective factors to the the relevant determinant of health.
The interrelationship between the personal, interpersonal and societal factors influencing people's ability to cope with change.

Topics include:
Physical or mental health problems, e.g. illness, disability.
Family separation, or relationship break up.
Changing house, school, and/or country.
Significant loss situations resulting in grief.
Drug use and misuse.
Experiencing significant failure, e.g. at school.
Repeated or ongoing pressured, risky, or stressful life situations at home, work or in the social environment.

Term 2
Achievement Standard 91239 - Internally assessed 5 credits.
Analyse issues related to sexuality and gender to develop strategies for addressing the issues.

Students will be able to analyse issues relevant to gender and sexuality related scenarios.
The analysis involves explaining influences on gender and sexuality, recommending personal, interpersonal, and societal strategies to strategies to address the issues, which reflect social justice.

Influences on gender and sexual identity can relate to individuals and/or groups in society and include a relevant selection of personal (e.g. biological), interpersonal (e.g. family or friends) and/or societal (e.g. culture, media) considerations. Strategies that reflect the values of social justice require personal and collective actions that contribute to a societal good and benefit the well-being of individuals, groups and communities.

Term 3
Achievement Standard 91237 - Internally assessed 5 credits.
Take action to enhance an aspect of people's wellbeing within the school or wider community.

Students will take action to enhance an aspect of people's well-being within the school or wider community. This involves identifying an issue that affects the well-being of people within the school, developing a workable plan to improve well-being, implementing the plan, and evaluating the effectiveness of the action. This will draw on the understanding of SMART goals.

Topics include:
Mental health.
Sexuality education.
Food and nutrition.
Body care and physical safety.

Term 4
Achievement Standard 91235 - Externally assessed 5 credits.
Analyse an adolescent health issue.

Students will evaluate the influences of a unfamiliar adolescent issue on the well-being of individuals, groups of people, and society.
Students will also provide strategies to address the influences of the issue to maintain well-being.

Topics include:
Stress management.
Adolescent alcohol use and misuse.
Enhancement of relationships.
Influences of body image.
Cannabis or other drug use.
Food related issues.
Maintenance of sexual/reproductive health.

Recommended Prior Learning

It is preferred student have taken 11HEA, however it is not a requirement.

This is a restricted entry course - approval by the Faculty Leader may be required. If you select this course, you must also choose a BACKUP subject.
