Subject Description

Objectives

  • To extend students' linguistic and cultural understanding and their ability to interact appropriately with others.
  • To introduce students to new ways of thinking about, questioning, and interpreting the world and their place in it.
  • To acquire knowledge, skills and attitudes that equip students for living in a world of diverse peoples, languages and cultures.
  • To challenge and consider our own identities and assumptions.
  • To develop understanding of the power of language.
  • To enjoy using another language in meaningful situations.

Content

This is a continuation and development of the Year 12 course and uses various themes of interest to students in order to reinforce language skills and aspects of Spanish life and culture. 

Topics studied may include 

  • Technology and Social Media.
  • Art.
  • Media.
  • Stereotypes.
  • Immigration.
  • Gypsies and Flamenco.
  • The Environment.
  • Film Study.
  • Politics and Religion.
  • Indigenous Peoples.

Subject Overview

Term 1
Infinitives as nouns, verbs with and without prepositions, negative conjugations, present subjunctive.

Term 2
Perfect subjunctive, sequence of tenses, imperfect subjunctive.

Term 3
Pluperfect subjunctive, conditional perfect, environment vocabulary, passive voice.

Term 4
Religion vocabulary, politics vocabulary.

Recommended Prior Learning

An Achieved grade in each achievement standard in NCEA Level 2 Spanish.
