Objectives

In this course, you will explore the four key concepts of English Language and Literature: Communication, Creativity, Connection, and Perspective. You will apply Language and Literature skills and knowledge in a variety of real-life contexts. The course includes listening, speaking, reading, writing, viewing, and presenting in a variety of mediums. There will be opportunities for reading literature from diverse cultures.

Tūrangawaewae: Under the Thistle

Our turangawaewae influences how we express ourselves creatively.
 Analysing New Zealand poetry and prose to produce an anthology of creative writing using effective and accurate language choices.

Stories from Near and Far

A purpose of stories is to develop empathy, connecting us to those whose lives are different from ours.
 Analysing a novel and short story from New Zealand and global literature. Comparing and contrasting these texts in a structured and accurate essay.

What makes a hero?

Film makers use technically innovative ways to communicate their idea of what a hero is.
 Analysing a film. Organising ideas in a structured essay.

Or, What You Will

True identity is a matter of perspective given that we all mask ourselves for an audience.
 Exploring themes in a Shakespearean comedy. Producing a collaborative visual and verbal text.


Extension/Enrichment Opportunities

The English Faculty offers a range of extension/enrichment opportunities, including Debating, Spoken Word Poetry Club, writing clubs, external writing and speech competitions, and trips or performances relevant to the curriculum.
