Objectives
The purpose of this course is to develop students’ problem-solving skills and critical thinking through a variety of mathematical and statistical tasks. Students will be working with the topics of Number, Measurement, Algebra, Statistics, Probability and Geometry.
There is the opportunity to participate in Mathematics Competitions and the MATHEX team competition.
Content
MYP Unit | Outline |
More than just a Box (Number and Measurement) | Metric units, estimation and calculation of length, area and volume. Rates and ratios. |
Finding 'X' (Algebra) | Introduction to expressions and equations. Exploring linear patterns and formulae. |
What’s the Story? (Statistics) | Construct and interpret a wide variety of tables and graphs. |
What are the Chances? (Probability) | Introduction to concepts of probability. Create and use two-way tables and tree diagrams. Carry out experiments and simulations. |
Shape Up! (Geometry) | Transformations and constructions. |
Students will be assessed with tests, assignments and projects.

Course Costs: $12.00 Write-on workbook and digital subscription for Education Perfect.
Associated Costs: $10.00 Australian Mathematics Competition, Otago Mathematics Competition.
Equipment Required: Casio Graphics Calculator fx-9750-II or fx-9860-GIII.
