Scholarship Photography

Subject Description

Format of the Assessment 

Candidates are to produce a portfolio and workbook extracts for assessment.
The portfolio can be EITHER a three-panel portfolio (folio board) OR a moving image portfolio, representing the requirements of the standard.
The workbook and the submitted portfolio must be prepared together, in parallel, in the same year.
Workbook material must be submitted in an A3 clearfile folder and is limited to 8 single sided A3 pages plus ONE title page.  


Outcome Description

The student will use knowledge of photography to produce an original body of work.


Scholarship Performance Descriptor

The student will demonstrate aspects of high level:

  • Analysis and critical thinking.
  • Integration, synthesis, and application of highly developed knowledge, skills, and understanding to complex situations.
  • Logical development, precision and clarity of ideas.


Candidates who were awarded Scholarship commonly:

  • Presented a genuine engagement in practice, and context was influential to the relationship between the folio and workbook.
  • Included experimental work in the folio/workbook to show how ideas were tested and later refined, with an investment into a range of processes.
  • Demonstrated control of conventions being used and how those were transferred into print, with awareness from inception through to export/print; for example, photographing in black and white, and printing in black and white.
  • Took the opportunity of the workbook to utilise their learning through research and concept.

Recommended Prior Learning

Students need to take 13APH to be able to enter Art Photography Scholarship.
