Year 13 (2025) students are required to attend Subject Confirmation on Thursday 23 January to finalise their timetable.
Subject Description

Objectives
- To develop a sense of personal worth.
- To develop the ability to work within a team, showing concern and respect for others, developing mutual trust, support and confidence within the team.
- To learn the importance of correct safety techniques in outdoor activities applying Risk Management.
- To be introduced to different kinds of communication.
- To develop leadership skills.
Content
- Bushcraft - Students will learn survival skills that will help them to survive in the bush. They will complete a 3 day tramp on the Waitakere Ranges, Kaimai Ranges or Great Barrier Island
- Leadership - Students develop their leadership skills. They teach a Bushcraft based unit to local primary school students and lead their group in an outdoor excursion.
- Mountain Biking - Students will develop confidence mountain biking. They will learn how to fix a puncture, change a wheel, alter brakes. They will develop skills that will enable them to spend a day mountain biking at Woodhill Forest.
- Rock Climbing - Students will learn to rock climb at Extreme Edge in Panmure, and apply bio mechanics to progress their technique and ability.
- Research - Students will examine a current event, issue or trend in Outdoor Education/Pursuits and present a critical reflection back to their peers.
- Safety Management - Students will thoroughly analyse accepted processes and routines displayed by professional providers during an outside experience.
- Outdoor First Aid - Students will participate in scenarios managing a first aid scene whilst in the outdoors. They will gain the two day first aid certificate and the outdoor first aid certificate.

Recommended Prior Learning
- A commitment applying the PE Department PRIDE values, and teacher approval.
- A willingness and commitment to be involved in outdoor practical activities.
- Students must have displayed a positive attitude to Outdoor Education and/or Physical Education during Year 12.
- Parental/Faculty Leader's consent.
Note: any student wanting to take both 13OED and 13PHE needs to have this approved by both the Careers Advisor (or Dean) and the Faculty Leader of PE.
Subject and Associated Costs
Course Cost: $795.00
This includes transport, accommodation, some gear hire, instruction, food for multiple overnight trips. Please note that on some occasions you will be required to provide your own food. Students will also need to borrow/hire/buy the following items: Sleeping bag, tramping boots, thermal top and bottom, fleece jumper, waterproof raincoat.
This fee MUST be paid in the following instalments: $375.00 week two, term one. $295.00 week two, term two; $125.00 week two, term three. Late payment of these fees may jeopardize the student's involvement in the activity. Certain costs must be met regardless of injury or withdrawal from the course.

You will be assessed in this course through all or a selection of the standards listed below.

Only students engaged in learning and achievement derived from Te Marautanga o Aotearoa are eligible to be awarded these subjects as part of the requirement for 14 credits in each of three subjects.
