Objectives

In this course, you will explore the four key concepts of English Language and Literature: Communication, Creativity, Connection, and Perspective. You will apply Language and Literature skills and knowledge in a variety of real-life contexts. The course includes listening, speaking, reading, writing, viewing, and presenting in a variety of mediums. There will be opportunities for reading literature from your own and a variety of other cultures.

Creators use language to create characters and convey ideas about their experiences.
Analysing coming-of-age short stories to produce a creative short story using effective and accurate language choices.

Looking into the Future

Dystopian texts compel us to reflect on the issues in our own world.
Analysing a film and a novel from the dystopian genre. Comparing and contrasting these texts in a structured and accurate essay.

Whose Story is it Anyway?

Personal stories from the perspectives of others can foster better intercultural understanding.
Analysing a memoir/autobiography. Organising ideas in a structured essay.

Language in Context

Creators use language in specific contexts to communicate meaning.
Analysing language use within a specific context.

Make me!

Creators can use persuasive language to promote social action.
Organising ideas and using language to produce a persuasive speech.


Extension/Enrichment Opportunities

The English Faculty offers a range of extension/enrichment opportunities, including Debating, Spoken Word Poetry Club, writing clubs, external writing and speech competitions, and trips or performances relevant to the curriculum.
