Subject Description

Recommended Prior Learning

Basic keyboarding and the ability to use common software applications (e.g. word processing).

Basic use of design tools - photoshop, Google suite, etc - also strongly recommended. 

Successful completion of Year 11 Programming or 11 Computing is strongly advised.

Junior level Technology courses also strongly advised.


Objectives

  • To further develop skills related to digital technologies practice when it comes to web development. This would include coding skills and planning skills for a website.
  • Continued exposure to the fundamental coding languages for website development - HTML, CSS, pHp and/or Javascript.
  • Gain further knowledge of relational database management skills.
  • Gaining coding skills - further SQL and basic PHP coding skills - for databases.
  • Improve planning and collaboration skills to help with further work in the technology industry.
  • Understanding how digital outcomes can be interpreted differently over time.
  • Using a variety of assessment strategies and opportunities to complete work in an effective manner.

Content

  • Review of basic HTML and CSS coding. Creation of a simple website regarding how technology can be interpreted differently over time.
  • Website Design Principles.
  • HTML and CSS coding, utilising Visual Studio Code as an editor and the editor available on the project space server. 
  • Plan, design, create, develop, test and evaluate a website (technological process). The final website will be uploaded on the server provided by the school.
  • Enhancing a website with Javascript.
  • Revision of SQL coding and relational DBMS (Database management systems).
  • Introduction to PHP coding and inserting this into the website.

Extension/Enrichment Opportunities

Students who show aptitude can take part in the Scholarship programme. The invitation is by the teacher.

Special Note:

In cases where there is a clash in the Achievement Standards when individual students to multiple technologies (especially Digital Technologies), alternative assessments will be discussed with those students to avoid students losing opportunities to obtain the desired number of credits. This will be done on an individual basis and at the teacher's discretion.

Assessment Policy & Procedures
Assessment Information

Achievement Standards made available to the students may depend on their personal Technology practice. A minimum of 14 credits will be available for every student.

NOTE: All of the NCEA standards are assessed as part of a project. Results are not available until all elements of the project work have been submitted by the student, marked by the subject teacher and internally moderated. Therefore, most results are not reported until the end of the year.

Course Costs: $5.00 for Web server space and database.
Associated Costs: Computer Lab printing costs.
