Recommended Prior Learning

At least 14 credits in Level 2 Classical Studies, Economics, Geography, History, Media Studies OR the student meets the requirements for entry to Level 3 English.


Objectives

  • To explore contemporary national and global issues.
  • To develop collaborative, inquiry, critical and creative thinking skills.
  • To gain knowledge of how ideologies shape society, and the role individuals and groups play through their social actions in influencing policy change in society.

Content

  • Make It 16 – Examine how individuals/groups use social action(s) to influence policy change(s).
  • Our Maunga  – Plan and carry out a social action to influence a policy change (Group Task).
  • Cannabis Law Reform – Conduct a critical social inquiry into Cannabis Law Reform in New Zealand.
  • Managing Crime – Examine how different ideologies influence ideas about how to respond to crime.

Associated Costs: $150 approx. (excluding flights) Wellington overnight trip including visit to Parliament, Te Papa, Zealandia and Victoria University of Wellington (TBC).
