Objectives
To develop musical skills through
- Playing music in groups and as a soloist.
- Creating music compositions.
- Understanding music and its relationship to our society.
- Developing reading and writing music skills.
- Using computer software to compose, sequence material, and develop aural skills.
Course Content
MYP Unit | Outline |
Passport to Music | Investigate, compose, perform and respond to musical genres selected by the students. |
Time Tourist | An inquiry into musical change through history to the present day. |
On Song | Introduction to song writing. |
Peak Performance | Solo performances, evaluation and reflection leading to organising the Junior Concert in early December. |
Subject Overview
Term 1
Time Tourist.
An investigation of the changes in Western music that have led to the entertainment we enjoy today. Learning is through a mixture of practical instrumental skills, group presentations and creative tasks. 8 weeks.
On Song.
A fun introduction to the basics of song writing. 3 weeks.
Term 2
Passport to Music.
An in-depth unit on musical genres. Students will research a musical genre from around the world and present their findings to the class. They will select one of the genres as an influence to construct a group composition. 9 weeks.
Term 3
Passport to Music (continued).
Groups will rehearse and perform their compositions to the class. They will then critically evaluate the success of their piece and those of their classmates. 10 weeks.
Term 4
Peak Performance.
Practical rehearsal skills leading to solo performances to the class. Outstanding performances will be selected for the Junior Concert, open to the public to listen to and enjoy. 7 weeks.
Recommended Prior Learning
Students should already be playing an instrument or be prepared to start learning in Year 10. Students will be given priority for lessons in the Instrumental/Vocal Teaching Programme. If Music has not been taken in Year 9, please enter a note stating your instrumental or music creation experience.
