Objectives
- A practically based course with an emphasis on composition/song writing and performance but covering a broad range of musical knowledge and skills.
- This course is designed to give students fundamental skills and knowledge for creating music.
- Preparation for a more specialised Year 13 Music course.
Content
- Performance – Instrumental/Voice – Solo and ensemble.
- Listening skills.
- Composition and instrumentation.
- Materials of music, study of music works including research.
Recommended Prior Learning
3 Achieved grades in Year 11 Music or HOD Music approval.
If you have not taken Year 11 Music, please write a note to describe your musical experience so far.

Associated Costs: $95.00 Music tuition, APO concert.
Pathway
A career in music can take many forms. The traditional role of the musician is still very much alive, but with the advent of new technology, it’s possible to launch a career in music using other musical skills. Fresh ideas are always welcome in a market where most tracks sound similar, so if you have a talent for creating interesting beats and melodies, you could find yourself studying further or with a career that supports your passion for music.

Standards which may be selected in addition to compulsory ones include: 91274, 91275. The core Achievement Standards of this course offer 28 credits. 7 credits are available through optional Achievement Standards.Year 13 Music Guideline(s):
● An Achieved grade in 3 NCEA Level 2 Music Standards or approval from HOD.
